Preparing Your Home for Fall: Preventing Water Damage | SERVPRO of Hayward

9/3/2024 (Permalink)

bright orange and yellow fall foliage in the gutter of a residential home Safeguarding your home from water damage is easy this Fall with these insights from SERVPRO of Hayward!

As fall settles in and temperatures begin to drop, homeowners in Hayward must prepare for the season’s potential challenges to protect their homes from water damage.

SERVPRO of Hayward offers essential tips to help you safeguard your property as autumn brings cooler weather and increased precipitation.

Inspect and Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Fall is a time when leaves and debris can quickly clog your gutters and downspouts. This blockage can cause water to overflow, leading to potential damage to your roof, siding, and foundation. To prevent these issues, make sure to inspect and clean your gutters before the leaves completely cover them.

Clear any debris to ensure that downspouts are directing water away from your home’s foundation. Regular maintenance will help prevent water from pooling or seeping into areas where it can cause damage, ensuring your home remains protected throughout the fall season.

Check for Roof and Siding Issues

With the arrival of fall, it’s essential to assess the condition of your roof and siding. Seasonal weather changes can exacerbate existing problems, making it crucial to look for any signs of damage. Examine your roof for missing or damaged shingles and check your siding for cracks or peeling.

Any gaps or issues should be repaired promptly to avoid further complications. By addressing these problems early, you can prevent water from infiltrating your home and avoid more extensive and costly repairs later.

Watch for Freezing Temperatures and Frozen Pipes

As temperatures drop, one of the significant risks in fall and winter is frozen pipes. Water inside pipes can freeze and expand, leading to burst pipes and substantial water damage. To prevent this, ensure that pipes in unheated areas, such as basements and crawl spaces, are properly insulated.

Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines inside. Additionally, let faucets drip slightly during extremely cold weather to keep water flowing and reduce the risk of freezing. Regularly monitor weather forecasts and take action when temperatures are expected to plummet to protect your plumbing system and prevent potential water damage.

By taking these proactive measures, you can help protect your home from water damage as the season changes. SERVPRO of Hayward is here to support you with expert advice and assistance in addressing any water damage concerns. If you need help with water damage prevention or repair, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Our skilled team is ready to ensure your home stays safe and dry throughout the fall and beyond. Reach out to SERVPRO of Hayward today to learn how we can assist in keeping your home in excellent condition.

Tackling Water Leaks to Avoid Stinky Smells | SERVPRO of Hayward

5/1/2024 (Permalink)

water dripping from ceiling into a large puddle on tile floor Trust our team at SERVPRO of Hayward to provide comprehensive services for a full recovery for all your water damage restoration needs.

Imagine coming home after a long day and immediately stepping into a puddle of water once you close the door behind you. Your dishwasher leaked. You left a window open and a storm came through. Your bathroom sink started leaking unexpectedly.

However it happens, your first instinct will most likely be to grab a mop and bucket or some towels to clean up the mess. Unfortunately, that often is not enough to fully get the situation under control. Water can quickly leak and seep under your floors or behind your walls and cause serious issues for you.

That’s why we always recommend a professional when it comes to water damage cleanup! We can help you avoid serious problems like mold, rot and stinky lingering odors like mildew.

Addressing the Leak First

Water can cause problems the moment it gets where it shouldn’t be in your home. It will start to leak down under your floorboards, behind your walls and ceiling, and it will find every crevice that it can.

As you sop up the standing water with a mop or a towel, the unfortunate reality of the situation is that some of the moisture has already made it to an area of your house that is really hard to reach without professional help. The water that is now behind your walls and under your feet will linger, causing it to become stagnant. The lack of air movement will also help ensure it can’t dry out properly.

Over time, this moisture will start to degrade your home’s internal structures, causing metal to rust, beams to swell and mold can even start to grow. Did you know that it only takes 24–48 hours for a few mold spores to grow into an entire colony? You could wind up dealing with a dangerous mold outbreak just a few days after seemingly recovering from a water disaster.

Follow the Smell

If you thought you got all of the water cleaned up but start to notice that your room smells funny a few days later, it might be mold. Mold and mildew give off a musty or earthy odor, which can typically be identified rather quickly. However, just because you can smell it, doesn’t mean that you can easily access it if it is growing in an area that you can’t get to.

In comes the pros at SERVPRO®! Our team will work on removing any residual moisture while also tackling your mold problem with safety in mind. In addition to providing mold remediation, we can also remove any lingering musty odors. We will turn off fans and shut down your HVAC system to contain the odor particles and then we will filter the air to make sure it smells fresh and clean once more.

Don’t ignore signs of a water leak. Contact SERVPRO for a full recovery.

Tracking Down Moisture in Your Home | SERVPRO of Hayward

1/2/2024 (Permalink)

close up of condensation on window pane and ledge Water damage can happen anywhere in your home. Call SERVPRO of Hayward to restore water damage on your property 24/7, 365.

We rely on water to get us through our days in so many ways! A daily dishwasher run, warm baths for the kids at night and even cooking up your favorite meal requires water in some capacity.

While having easy access to water is a blessing most of the time, a single leak anywhere in your home can have a serious impact. Mother Nature can also be the culprit for water leaks when storms come to town and damage our homes.

Knowing where to look for water leaks and moisture can help you discover the problem quicker and tackle your restoration faster. Check these spots around your home regularly so you can address issues immediately.

Under the Sink

Our faucets and taps play a vital role in this easy access to water, but their water lines are vulnerable to leaking at any time. Water is constantly flowing through your pipes and behind your walls, and a single loose connection could become the start of a troubling water leak.

Once water starts to leak from under your sink, it can get into cupboards, behind your walls and under your floors before it is discovered. Check your water lines often, and don’t forget to check under the sink next to where your dishwasher is located. Most dishwashers have water lines that run alongside your kitchen faucet, which could also leak unexpectedly.

Under Appliances

Most of us have many appliances in our homes that rely on water to function. Our dishwashers, ice makers, water heaters and washing machines can all malfunction and leak without warning, and these types of leaks have the potential to get really bad really quickly as water is continually pumped onto your floor.

If you suspect a water leak started around an appliance, pull it away from the wall to check for signs of water damage like water on your floor, water spots or mold growth. Try to get in the habit of doing this every time you deep-clean your house, but especially if you notice a new puddle.

Behind the Walls

The trouble with water is that once it starts to leak, it can leak all over the place in a short amount of time. It will seep into the tiniest cracks and crevasses and will eventually make its way behind your walls or under your floors.

Once it is there, it can be really hard to dry out on your own and mold can set in. If your wall feels soft or your floorboards are starting to warp upwards, it’s time to do a little investigating.

Checking Windows and Doors

Condensation can happen around your windows and doors as the temperature changes drastically at this time of year. This condensation can linger on your windows or drip down onto your windowpane and cause significant damage over time.

Moisture can also get in through any gaps, cracks or sagging around these areas. Check them often by running a finger over your windowsills, and check your doors for drafts or other sealing issues.

We can’t always prevent water damage, which is where SERVPRO of Hayward comes into play! Our team will quickly tackle water damage by making sure your space is cleaned, dried and restored from top to bottom.

Don’t ignore signs of water damage! Call SERVPRO® for a quick restoration.

Tips for Tackling Water Disasters at Work | SERVPRO of Hayward

12/1/2023 (Permalink)

concrete floor tiling with large cracks and water on it SERVPRO of Hayward is Here to Help® your business when water damage strikes.

Discovering standing water at your business can be incredibly frustrating and downright overwhelming. One minute you are casually unlocking doors and flipping on lights in the morning and, the next, your socks are soaked and a musty odor hits your nose. What do you do first?

Water damage can occur in many different ways, but they all should be dealt with quickly in order to avoid long-term issues for your property.

Having a plan in place can help you respond faster in a true water emergency, and we are here to help you do just that! Check out our tips for dealing with standing water at your business below.

Taking It One Step at a Time

Finding your property flooded or soaked through can be very unnerving. Even if you did everything right, it can still take you by surprise!

Stay calm and follow these steps to help you stay in control and get things cleaned up quickly:

1. Stay safe. Safety is always key, which is why you should always focus your attention on keeping your staff safe in an unexpected situation. Observe the damage from a dry location and then get us on the phone right away. Our team will start gathering our supplies, and we will be on the road to you quickly.

2. Control the disaster. Taking control of the situation can help prevent the problem from getting worse. Locate the source of the leak as quickly as possible, and turn off the appropriate water valve. If you can’t locate the source right away, simply turn off the main water valve to your building for the time being.

3. Start the drying process. Floodwater can be dangerous, so try to avoid walking through it if at all possible. Sewage, storm runoff or even dangerous chemicals could have made their way into the water that is now all over your floor, so stay dry as you start to open windows and ventilate the area. Consider blocking off the entrances to the area as well to keep employees and customers out of harm’s reach.

Pool of water sitting on top of a herringbone patterned wood floor with furniture nearby If you discover water damage in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Hayward right away.

Water is constantly flowing through our homes to help us wash our clothes, cook dinner and give the family dog a bath. We rely on water to do so much in our homes, and we are grateful for the easy access to such a critical resource.

That easy access does come with drawbacks, however. Since water is constantly at our fingertips and flowing through pipes behind our walls, there is always the potential for a water disaster to occur. Not only that, but Mother Nature can cause significant damage when a heavy rain or flash flooding event comes to town. Since we haven’t had much rain this season, a single heavy rain event could cause serious flooding concerns for our community.

Preventing water damage from even occurring is always ideal, but it’s just not always possible. Thankfully, your local water damage restoration team is here to help!

Controlling the Situation

Timing is key when it comes to responding to a water disaster. Once a leak starts, water can seep and flow beneath your floors and behind your walls in minutes and can be hard or even impossible to dry out on your own.

If you notice a puddle near an appliance or come home to standing water in your kitchen, jump into action by turning off the main water valve connected to the appliance to stop the flow of water. If the leak is coming from your roof during a heavy rain, you may just need to wait out the storm and set a bucket under the drip in the meantime.

Do your best to avoid walking through the water, as electrical wires could have charged the area. Turn off all electricity in the room before investigating further.

Now that the situation is under control, it’s time to pick up the phone and call SERVPRO®. Our team is here 247, and it is our job to respond to calls just like this! We are locally owned and operated, which means we can be at your house in the blink of an eye with a plan and the knowledge to help you recover.

Our Efficient Drying Process

We are well-acquainted with water damage and what it can do to homes, so we jump into action right away to form your recovery plan. While we are chatting with you on the phone, take some photos of the damage. This will help us personalize your recovery, but will also make the claims process easier for you and your insurance company.

A few things happen at once when our trucks and restoration team arrives at your house. Some of us will start setting up our drying equipment while others will start removing your possessions to avoid further damage. We want to dry out your space as quickly as possible but we certainly don’t want to cause any more damage while we do so.

How to Respond to a Flash Flood Situation | SERVPRO of Hayward

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

image of a large body of water during a rain storm with ripples caused by the heavy downpour Water damage in your home? Not for long with SERVPRO of Hayward on the case!

We are experiencing an interesting summer in terms of weather so far! We have had less rain and fewer storms than we typically do during this time of year, but the season certainly is not over.

Rain storms can either be calm and idyllic or strong and frankly a little scary. They can bring heavy rain, whipping winds, and even hail or the occasional tornado. While we are grateful that our homes are sturdy and do a great job of keeping us safe, sometimes it can prove to be too much and the rain will force its way inside our homes.

Our SERVPRO of Hayward team wants you to stay safe and dry if a storm comes to town, so check out our tips below to learn more about intense rains and flash floods.

The Dangers of Serious Rain

We all appreciate a gentle rain from time to time, but flash flooding conditions are much different. If the rain starts to fall fast and furiously, our area can quickly become in danger of flooded roads and yards. This is especially true if you live near Hayward Lake or any of the connecting creeks.

While we cannot control what Mother Nature does, we can be prepared for it! Preparing in advance can help you avoid more serious damages and you can ensure the safety of your family.

How to Stay Safe

Getting your home ready and getting your family to safety should always be your top priorities. Get out of the elements and head home as soon as a flood watch is issued or a strong storm is predicted.

Avoid low-lying areas or roads that you know happen to flood a lot when it rains. Tidy up your yard and consider moving things into your garage in case the water makes its way to your home. Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and 12 inches can sweep away your car.

Move anything fragile or sentimental out of your basement and consider turning off the electricity down there just to be safe. Wait out the storm with your family on a higher level and don’t panic if the water starts flowing in. Just avoid walking through the water and wait for it to stop rushing into your home. The next best step is to call your friends at SERVPRO of Hayward for a full restoration.

Future Water Damage Prevention Strategies

We know that weather is by nature unpredictable, which is why you can’t completely plan for every scenario. However, you can learn something from every situation and that can help you plan for the future.

For example, if your basement always floods when it rains, it may be a good idea to consider getting it professionally graded. This process of moving dirt around your yard can help create better channels for the rain to flow down and away from your home instead of backwards into your foundation.

Another investment that will pay off in a big way is a sump pump. Sump pumps help keep your lowest level dry by kicking on when they sense excess water in the ground and it works by pulling the water away from your foundation and it pumps it back up to the surface.

Remember that we are always here when you need us. Our team is fully trained in water damage restoration and flooding issues, and we will work hard to help you overcome your situation as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

We are here for all of your water disasters. Contact us day or night for a quick recovery.

Common Places Where Water Damage Starts | SERVPRO® of Hayward

6/12/2023 (Permalink)

blue bucket in the middle of the living area catching water falling from the ceiling Think you may have water damage in your home? Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Hayward to find the source.

Water damage can occur anywhere in your home, which makes it one of the more frustrating home damage situations. To make matters worse, it can also happen quickly and quietly.

If a water leak or situation develops slowly, it could spread for a long time before it is eventually noticed by you. By knowing where to look for water damage around your home in the Hayward area, you can stop a problem before it gets out of hand.

Check out the areas below around your home often in order to help your house stay dry.

Up on the roof. When was the last time you gave your roof a thorough inspection? Chances are that it’s been awhile. Your roof is vulnerable to water leaks whenever it rains or snows, leaving your attic wet and your walls compromised.

A tiny leak might be difficult to discover right away, but eventually that tiny leak will lead to a widespread water damage situation.

When water enters your home, it doesn’t just stay in one location. It has the ability to drip and seep through your attic, ceiling, walls and floors. Once it gets behind your walls, your risk of experiencing a mold problem increases drastically.

Your bathrooms. Of course bathrooms are on this list! Our bathrooms are the rooms that use water the most often, so the potential of experiencing water damage in them is quite common.

Investigating a mysterious puddle or tracking down the origins of a dripping water line can help prevent any damage from getting worse. It is also important to lower your humidity and dry out your bathroom often to reduce your moisture levels.

Another important task is to inspect your plumbing systems regularly. Doing so can help you catch the beginnings of a pipe leak or a worn seal that is about to break.

Your water-reliant appliances. Dishwashers, washing machines and even refrigerators use water every day to help us perform our daily tasks and chores. Appliance leaks can be particularly frustrating because they can be hard to spot if the leak happens below or behind our heavy appliances.

Even though it may not sound super pleasant, you should get in the habit of pulling your appliances away from the wall on occasion to check for water spots and signs of mold growth.

You can also do a quick check before firing up any of your appliances by running a hand along them to check for moisture or drips. Another way to greatly reduce your risk of experiencing an appliance leak is to avoid letting them get outdated. Older appliances tend to leak or malfunction more often, so do your best to ensure you have the most reliable equipment in your home.

If you do end up suffering water damage, your SERVPRO of Hayward team will come to the rescue!

The Basics on Appliance Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Hayward

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

a blue and white hot water heater showing signs of a water leak Have water damage in your home from an appliance? SERVPRO of Hayward is always on call ready to help.

We rely on water to help us perform so many everyday tasks! Running the washing machine, washing dishes, giving your kids a bath and providing ice to chill your drink are just some of the ways water is used in the home.

Because water is so prevalent in our lives, the risk of water damage is always present. Any appliance that uses water to function runs the risk of causing water damage when it malfunctions.

Learning what to look for when it comes to potential water damage can help you protect your appliances and your home from costly and extensive water troubles.

Maintaining Your Appliances

The best way to reduce your risk of water damage is to be proactive about your appliance maintenance! Whenever you pass by or use appliances like your dishwasher, fridge or washing machine, check the floor for water or puddles near the units.

Sometimes, leaks can go unnoticed underneath your refrigerator or dishwasher, so be cautious about any soft spots in the floor or an unexplained puddle. It is also important to pull the bigger appliances away from the wall once a year to clean them and check for signs of water damage or mold growth.

One system that should be addressed often is your HVAC system! It should be serviced once a year to make sure it is in good condition, and you should give it an inspection to look for moisture near the vents or under the unit often. Whenever water is present where it shouldn’t be, it can be a sign of a potential appliance malfunction.

Your water heater is also a large appliance that could experience water issues! Don’t forget to check around it as well and give it a thorough inspection every year.

Long-Term Maintenance Tasks

In addition to staying on top of any emerging issues, it is important to get your appliances serviced regularly, depending on the recommendation of the manufacturer. If you feel more comfortable with a professional, give them a call! Otherwise, there are some things you can do on your own as well.

Check the hoses and other tubes leading from your fridge, washing machine and other appliances. Holes or kinks can be a sign of a potential problem, so replace them right away to avoid an issue from occurring.

When you head to the store to find replacement parts, choose high-quality parts that will last for a long time. As your appliances age, consider replacing them completely to have the safest products throughout your house. Keep your home safe by being proactive about leaks and maintaining your appliances.

Have water damage in your home from an appliance or another source? Our team is here to help, so call us day or night.

Stop Spring Water Damage Where It Counts | SERVPRO® of Hayward

3/10/2023 (Permalink)

dark stormy clouds forming into a spring storm SERVPRO of Hayward team is always here for you, if you experience any storm damage call us right away.

Spring is on the way! While we do appreciate that we experience every single season here in northern Wisconsin, we are sure glad to see those subzero temperatures slowly fade away and the spring thaw occurs. It is important for you to be proactive in your preparations to avoid water or storm damage to your home.

Don’t just focus on the interior of your home, though! Winter weather can cause damage to your roof and around your property that could pose a large threat when the first spring storm rolls through. Check out our latest blog post below to get some tips on how to prepare.

Address Your Property

Winter can cause a lot of debris and buildup to make its way onto your roof and into your gutters. Wind, ice and snow can all cause blockages in your gutters.

In addition, if you didn’t clean out your gutters in the fall, any leaf buildup could lead to water issues on your roof when the rain starts to fall. If the rain can’t flow down your roof, it can eventually get into your attic and leak down your walls.

It is also an important time to make sure any vents around your house are clear. Over the winter, they can create condensation and ice buildup around the openings. If your furnace, dryer or even attic vents can’t work properly, it can be dangerous to your family and cause appliance malfunctions.

Another place that commonly is a source of water damage is near your outdoor faucets and along your water lines outside. If any water froze and expanded in the pipes, they could crack or completely burst. Addressing cracks and or safely thawing your pipes now can prevent a large issue later in the spring.

Fix It Up

Since the majority of us spend most of our time inside during the winter months, it can be easy to forget about our home’s exterior and roof. Out of sight, out of mind, right? But winter is actually a common season for roof damage.

Because we have had such a volatile and snowy winter season, ice dams and hefty snow buildup are common on a lot of our area homes. It is crucial that you check your roof for damage around your shingles and near the edges to catch an issue now before it is too late.

The damage also doesn’t have to be obvious for it to cause extensive water issues in your home. A single crack or missing shingle will quickly become a problem when the snow thaws or the first spring storm comes through.

Preparing for the Storms

A sump pump is a great investment in your home, but only if it is working! Give it a thorough inspection and consider having a professional come out to give it a look. A simple clog or malfunction can cause your basement to fill up with water and that type of damage can cause a significant toll on your family.

Before the first spring storm forecast, give your emergency kit an update and review your safety plan with everyone in your household. It is important that everyone knows how to reliably receive weather alerts and knows where your safe shelter location is in your home.

We know that water or storm damage is a possibility during any season, and spring is no different! If you discover home damage at any point in the year, give us a call at SERVPRO of Hayward and we will work hard to dry out your possessions and address any damage right away for you.

The Basics of Keeping Your Commercial Property Dry | SERVPRO® of Hayward

2/28/2023 (Permalink)

corner of interior wall showing signs of black mold from water damage Experienced water damage in your commercial building? SERVPRO of Hayward can help you get dried out quickly.

Water, water everywhere! The threat of water damage is a constant when you are a business or commercial property owner. Whether it be from a severe storm or a leaky toilet, any kind of water damage has the potential to be widespread.

Catching every drip or minor leak can help you avoid a large-scale disaster. If your business is a large operation or in a warehouse, it can be that much harder to stay on top of any issues. We explain some helpful ways to avoid water damage below, so check it out.

Common Areas of Concern

No one wants to experience water damage, but that is especially true if you are a business owner and rely on being open to serve customers or create your product. Having to close can lead to lost revenue, wages and a costly repair bill.

By being proactive about checking the locations that often are the culprits for water issues, it can help you catch a problem as it occurs or at the very beginning of the trouble:

1. The roof. The roof over your head can lead to all kinds of water issues if it is damaged. Broken or cracked shingles can invite water into your attic or top level and leak its way down your walls and into your floors. A single event like a falling tree can also cause structural damage that leads to a widespread water disaster. It is important to routinely get up on your roof for damage, especially after a severe storm or a wind event. You should also make sure to have a plan to remove snow from your roof after a heavy snowstorm.

2. Bathrooms. Since water is flowing in and out of our bathrooms on a daily basis, these areas need to be inspected often as well. Toilets and sinks can cause a lot of damage without much warning. Even tiny holes or cracks along pipelines can quietly leak and cause a lot of damage. Designate a member of your staff to check your bathrooms often for water issues.

3. Water heaters/HVAC/boilers. Any appliance that uses water to function has the potential to leak. Water lines can get clogged, drains can back up and even a system malfunction can cause the appliance to leak all over the floor. If you notice any mysterious puddles or notice a drop in water pressure from your faucets, have your maintenance crew investigate right away.

Stopping Water Damage at the Start

Aside from any sort of weather event, most water damage is actually preventable! If you take the time to prepare and investigate issues at the source, you can cut your losses dramatically.

One of the best ways to can minimize your damages is to create a maintenance plan. This helps you stay on top of cleaning, inspections and routine upkeep for your space and equipment.

In addition, having an Emergency Ready Plan for your space can help take out the uncertainty for your team after a water disaster. Our SERVPRO of Hayward team can help you create the best plan tailored to your building’s specific needs and layout.

Timing is crucial when it comes to reducing the extent of your water damage. Shut off all water lines, close off the area and call us right away! Our water damage restoration team will be there right away to help you fully recover and get your doors back open for business quickly.

Protect Your Home From Water Damage in the New Year | SERVPRO® of Hayward

1/10/2023 (Permalink)

water failing from a sink due to a clogged drain Have water damage in your home? Contact SERVPRO of Hayward for quick and professional restoration.

With a new year comes new possibilities! While you are busy making New Year’s resolutions and working on decluttering your life, incorporate these tips on reducing your risk for water damage in your home.

Since water damage is a constant threat no matter what season we are in, it is important to take proper steps before the threat is even present.

Where Does Water Damage Start?

In order to fully understand where water damage comes from, you have to be familiar with the different ways water could infiltrate your home. Gutters with blockages and a poorly graded yard are common reasons for water damage outside the home, while fixture malfunctions and appliance failures are the leading causes inside the home.

Rusted-out pipes or caulking issues can cause moisture issues in your home. When those leaks or moist areas are left untreated, mold growth can begin or the lingering water can start to rot out the affected area.

Your appliances are also vulnerable to water where it shouldn’t be. They could rust or malfunction, leaving you with frustration and probably a big puddle on the floor.

Your appliances could also begin to rust or stop working if a drip gets to their electronic components. The sooner you catch an issue at its source, the more you can mitigate damages.

Be Proactive Against Water Damage

While even just an inch of water can cause widespread damage, you can practice preventive steps every day. Early detection can save you precious time and money if you can catch a problem at the source!

Regularly check your bathrooms and kitchens for water stains or the beginnings of mold growth. When it rains or on really cold winter days, check for condensation along your window panes. Be aware of any emerging musty odors in your home that could indicate a mold issue.

Inspect your roof regularly to catch any missing shingles or structural issues, and clean your gutters at the start of a new season to encourage proper water flow.

When the snow flies and the temperature dips below freezing, you have to be especially careful about ice dams forming on your roof. Ice dams can build up over time and cause extensive water damage when the ice melts and runs down your roof.

You should also have your yard professionally graded if you live in a low area or have a property that slopes toward your house. This ensures that any rain water or melting snow will run down and away from your home.

Water is everywhere! We use it in our homes every day, so that opens us up to the threat of water damage at any time. While some water damage can be instantly obvious, other situations can develop slowly without many signs.

It takes some investigative work to discover a water leak in your home. We can help you pinpoint the parts of your home that are most vulnerable to leaks in our latest blog post below.

<h3bathroom-utilities">Your Bathroom Utilities

Bathroom fixtures are one of the most common places for water issues to occur in our homes. Sinks, bathtubs and toilets all have water lines that could burst or wear away over time.

Any time you are doing a routine cleaning of your bathroom, check your water lines and the seals around them. If you notice wearing or deterioration, address these issues right away to prevent a major issue from occurring later.

<h3water-reliant-appliances">Your Water-Reliant Appliances

We are so grateful that appliances like water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines exist! They make a busy life a little easier. However, whenever water is used in your home, the threat of water damage is present.

Routinely checking for leaks behind and under these appliances can help you stop a water problem in its tracks. Pull them away from the wall, unplug them and do a full check around the appliance. If there is any staining or peeling paint on the wall or if there is visible mold growth, call us immediately!

<h3weather-and-our-homes">Wisconsin Weather and Our Homes

We all know how brutal the weather can be in Hayward! Whether we are in the heat of the summer experiencing heavy rain or are hunkered down during a blizzard in the winter, we know how destructive water can be.

We are lucky enough to be in an area of the United States that can see snow for half of the year. We already had our first brush with snow back in October. Since the threat of water damage is so constant for us, it is important to prepare your home as soon as you are able when the weather starts to cool down.

You can help reduce the risk of water damage in your home by controlling the excess moisture. Sealing any gaps around your windows or doors and addressing any drafty areas of your home can help prevent condensation or moisture buildup.

It is also important to clear out your gutters and remove debris from your roof so your gutter system can work efficiently for you all year long.

How Water Damage Affects Your Home | SERVPRO® of Hayward

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

a bathroom sink showing signs of a water leak SERVPRO of Hayward is your 24/7 water restoration expert. Call us right away if you need immediate service.

Even the most insignificant amount of water in your home can cause long-term damage. Whether it be a slow drip from that pesky leaky faucet in your basement or a small water spot on the ceiling after a heavy rain or snow melt, it can cause major headaches in the long run if left untreated.

An average household leak can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water in a year.

Water damage moves quickly and silently, seeping into walls, floorboards and through softer surfaces like carpet and furniture. Catching it early and acting on the damage gives your home the best chance of drying out properly.

Here’s what you need to know about the timeline of water damage:

<h2the-first-24-hours">In the First 24 Hours

If you live in a house, there is a one in four chance of a flood damaging your home within a 30-year period in a high-risk area. Especially with the change in seasons and the snow melt in upper Wisconsin, untreated water damage in your home can lead to disastrous effects.

The first 24 to 48 hours after the flooding or water damage has occurred can be the most important timeframe in preventing long-term problems. While quick action can help in the long run, even the quickest responses can still cause certain fragile items in your home to be damaged beyond repair.

Possessions like books, photo albums or other soft materials are especially vulnerable to immediate and irreparable damage. They will warp, swell or simply fall apart after being soaked in water.

We strive to “restore vs. replace” here at SERVPRO of Hayward, and we will do our best to preserve those precious memories and keepsakes for you. While we always do our best work, if there are some materials that cannot be saved, this will be communicated to you.

These types of things are usually removed first to expedite their drying process to give them the best chance of restoration.

<h2the-first-week">Within the First Week

After the first 24 hours, water damage will bring about mold, and once mold sets in, it can spread like wildfire. If it starts to grow in high-risk areas, it can even damage your home’s internal structure.

Additionally, porous surfaces such as wood surfaces and walls will become increasingly compromised, and metal surfaces will start corroding.

<h2one-week">After One Week

After a week, any untreated and excess moisture can cause irreversible damage. As the days go by, it gets more and more expensive to restore and more extensive to rebuild upon the damage. It is important to not delay in your response!

<h2SERVPRO-of-hayward-will-help">How SERVPRO of Hayward Will Help

We begin your restoration process with the first phone call, usually within 24 hours. We begin with our water extraction process, and then we proceed on to cleaning, sanitizing and deodorizing your floors and other soft materials in your home.

After the majority of the visible water is removed, our technicians will use our state-of-the-art drying equipment to remove the hidden moisture.

If the damage is extensive, after these first few cleanup steps, your home may need additional construction work to fully restore itself to its preloss condition. Whether it is just a minor repair or a full rebuild of an area, we can help. SERVPRO of Hayward will keep you up to date on every step and have you back in your home or business in no time.

Regardless of the type of water damage sustained, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover. Contact us 247 when you need a dependable team to help you recover.

3 Types of Flooding & the 4 Reasons They Occur | SERVPRO® of Hayward

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

a street completely submerged in water and a flood warning sign in roadway Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO of Hayward has the team to help you recover from any disastrous event.

Natural disasters are all dangerous, but typically, it will be tornadoes, hurricanes or lightning strikes that come to mind. However, flooding is actually the most common type of natural disaster, and it claims more lives in the United States annually than any other type of disaster, while leaving large amounts of destruction in its wake.

Anywhere throughout America can experience flooding and the destruction it brings, but there are similarities in the types of floods and the origins of them. There are three types of flooding that are the most common, which occur for four typical reasons.

The 3 Types of Flooding That are Common

Flash floods can happen any time heavy rain lingers over an area and overwhelms its ability to drain the water away. This excess water runoff can cause floodwaters to swell quickly, often with currents fast enough to carry away debris, cars or people in its pathway.

River floods, as the name implies, occur along rivers that have grown overfilled. When the river water rises above the height of the banks, floods can occur in nearby areas and cause damage.

Coastal floods are similar to river floods, but occur near large bodies of water such as gulfs and oceans. Similar to river floods, they occur when the water rises beyond the capacity of the shores.

The Natural Flooding Types That are Common

Heavy rainfall. Storms with excessive rainfall, or storms that sit and rest over an area for an extended period, can cause flash floods or river flooding. Urban areas are more at risk for rain floods, because the higher percentage of concrete and asphalt means there’s a lack of soil to soak up all that water.

Oceanic activity. When there is a heavy amount of rainfall over the ocean, such as what is associated with hurricanes or storm surges, water levels can rise into surrounding areas in the form of a coastal flood.

Dams and levees failing. In 2005, part of the devastation associated with Hurricane Katrina was due to the failure of the levees. When levees and dams can no longer contain the water behind them, they can break and cause serious destruction.

Snowmelts and ice dams. When an area receives rain and ice throughout the winter, this frozen moisture can pile up and melt rapidly once warmer temperatures arise. This can also lead to river floods due to ice dams or ice jams blocking the water’s flow downstream.

Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover from its disastrous effects. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

Keep Your Hot Water Heater Functioning at Its Best

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

It’s easy to forget about your hot water heater as long as it’s doing its job. However, without regular maintenance, you may come home or wake up in the middle of the night to water everywhere. Some hot water heaters can hold fifty or more gallons of water and can make quite the mess!

There is some simple regular maintenance you can do to be sure your hot water heater is staying in tip-top shape.

  • Once or twice a year, do a visual inspection of your hot water heater to check for any loose screws, nuts or bolts, as well as aged gaskets. Any of these could allow the tank to leak. Look for any signs of rust, corrosion or water pooled under the tank.
  • Another tip for maintaining your hot water heater is to drain and flush it twice a year. This helps remove any sediment or debris in the tank.
  • It is also advisable to make sure that the pressure relief valve is in proper working order. An improperly working pressure relief valve, although rare, could cause your tank to explode due to excessive built up pressure.
  • The anode rod in your hot water heater should be replaced every three to five years. This rod attracts the elements in water that cause oxidation. Rust colored water and a metallic taste are sure signs that the anode rod needs replacing.

If you notice that your hot water heater has been leaking, don’t hesitate to give SERVPRO of Hayward a call at 715-634-0699.

Response Time is Critical with Burst Pipes

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

Burst Pipe Damage A seasonal cabin had a burst pipe that was not discovered right away. The drywall on the ceiling became saturated and fell.

Within minutes of a pipe bursting, water will spread throughout your property, saturating everything in its path. It will absorb into walls, floors, upholstery and your other belongings. In the next hour to twenty-four hours, your drywall will begin to swell and break down, metal surfaces will begin to tarnish, furniture will begin to swell and crack and dyes and inks from cloth, paper goods and upholstery will begin to spread and stain. A musty odor will likely start to be noticeable also.

With any luck, you will have realized that you have a problem by this point and called SERVPRO of Hayward! If so, you will get a firsthand demonstration of SERVPRO’s 1/4/8 rule. Within one hour from notice of loss, a SERVPRO Franchise Professional will contact the insured. Within four hours of loss notification, SERVPRO of Hayward will be onsite to begin mitigation if necessary. Within eight business hours, the adjuster will be contacted with a verbal briefing of the scope of work for the loss.

If the water leak goes unnoticed and unattended, we are looking at much bigger problems. Mold and mildew can begin growing and spreading as quickly as forty-eight hours from the initial leak. This can quickly become a serious biohazard danger. Doors, windows and studs will begin to swell and warp. Metal will begin to rust and corrode. Furniture warps and begins molding. Paint will begin to blister along with wood floors swelling and warping.

If you have experienced a burst pipe, give SERVPRO of Hayward a call at 715-634-0699 for quick, efficient mitigation!

Ice Dams: The Damage They Can Cause and How to Prevent Them

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

Ice dams can cause a multitude of problems for a homeowner. Ice dams become extremely heavy as they grow. Eventually their weight will tear down your gutters, shingles and downspouts. This is also dangerous to you and your loved ones that may be walking along where the ice dam falls. If enough snow and ice build up, it could also lead to roof collapse. Ice and snow will back up behind the ice dam and eventually leak into your attic which can lead to mold and mildew and other water damage to your home.

The best way to prevent ice dams is to be sure that your attic is properly ventilated and insulated. Another method for preventing them is to install heated cables on your roof. These cables attach to the edge of your roof in a zigzag pattern and prevent snow and ice from building up.

If you already have ice dams forming, you’re going to need a quick fix to get rid of the ice dam and possibly SERVPRO if there is already water damage to your home.  One option to prevent further build up is to rake your roof with a long handled roof rake. This will lower the exterior temperature of your roof by removing the insulation (snow) and also take away material that would potentially be added to the ice dam. Another option is to fill panty hose with calcium chloride ice melter and place it on your roof. Lay it on the roof so it crosses the ice dam and hangs over the gutter. It should create a channel for water to flow down and off the roof.

If you suspect water damage from ice dams or any other source of water in your home, please give SERVPRO of Hayward a call at 715-634-0699!

Leaking Dishwasher can lead to huge problems

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

Are you one of the unfortunate homeowners dealing with dishwasher water damage? It’s a scene that has played out in countless movies, usually to be funny. Kid puts regular soap in dishwasher, dishwasher explodes with bubbles, and we all have a good laugh at their expense. But when you’re dealing with water leaks from your dishwasher, you need to know how quickly water damages can occur, why they happen, and what to do about them.

Dishwasher water damage can occur within just a couple of hours. You get home, turn on the dishwasher, walk away and watch TV for a while, or run a few errands, only to come home and find a pool of water on the kitchen floor. The first reaction should be to soak up as much of the water as you can, because the longer it sits there, the more likely it will cause permanent damage.

Common causes of dishwasher leaks include:

  • Worn gaskets
  • Dishwasher not level
  • Wrong dishwashing soap used
  • Broken door
  • Defective dishwasher tub

Check your coverage

4/22/2021 (Permalink)

With spring is full force, storm season is here. Are you covered in the case of water backup or sewer back up? If this question leaves you in doubt, it might be a good idea to confirm that you are covered for such a loss with your insurance agent.  The fact is, most unendorsed homeowner's insurance policies DO NOT provide coverage for Water Backup & Sewer Back up.

Water Backup & Sewer Backup claims are one of the more common insurance claims on a homeowner's policy and can be one of the most costly as well.  Types of losses we are referring to are as follows:

  • Backup of a sewer or drain
  • Over flow or discharge of a sump
  • Sump failure

Even if you have an unfinished basement, you should STRONGLY consider the endorsement as losses can add up quickly when the water is rising.  Water backups not only cause damage that is difficult and expensive to repair but also can create health hazards.

Call your agent today to discuss your policy.

Frozen Tundra

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

Here in northern Wisconsin, you can never predict the weather. Over the last couple of weeks temps have barely gotten over zero degrees. With temperatures that low it is way more likely for your water pipes to freeze. Frozen pipes came make quite the mess, cost you lost of money and down time for your business. Frozen pipes are not the way you want to spend your time. The water pipes can burst causing more water damage and with the subzero temps it can take a long time for clean-up, can also be the perfect habitat for mold to grow. We need to remember to always leave all indoor faucets at a steady drip. Leaving them run can release any built-up pressure that can cause your pipes to burst. We at SERVPRO are always here to give you any helpful tips we can.

Keep the water in the pipes

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

With this cold weather come freezing water and pipes. With very little to no snow cover to insulate or protect your pipes, they are exposed to the freezing winds and ground. There are many precautions everyone can take to prevent a pipe bursting and may save you hundreds to thousands of dollars.

  • Heat tape. You can go to your local hardware store to purchase. It will keep your pipes at the temperature to prevent them from freezing.
  • Stacking straw or hay bails around the foundation of your home can help keep the wind and snow out with helping to keep the little bit of warmth in.
  • Leaving water trickling. Leave your faucets on just a little bit can save so much. Keeping water flowing can save it from freezing. It also releases any pressure that may build up from freezing and expanding

Sewer Backup in Crawl Space in Hayward

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

When we think about water damage we often think that it is rainwater, floodwater, a broken pipe that causes water damage, not sewage backup.  This is not something that anyone wants to deal with especially when it comes to sewage.  At SERVPRO of Hayward, our crews are properly trained and certified for the removal and cleaning of sewage backup. Shown here is one of our technicians at SERVPRO of Hayward wearing all the proper PPE gear to enter the crawl space and the cleaning product to disinfect the area properly.  This sewage backup, fortunately, occurred in the crawlspace which was contained there, some other instances we have seen have been directly in the basement which usually causes major damage to the home, requiring the resident to leave for a period of time as cleanup happens so no contamination occurs.  If you have water damage due to sewer backup give us a call at 715-634-0699 for proper service from SERVPRO of Hayward.

It's the water you don't see that matters

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

You think it's the water that is on the rise flooding into your house that poses the problem, when it's actually the water you don't see that matters.

A lot of people think that when they "suck" the water out of their basements when either a pipe bursts or floodwaters rise they are done.  There could be more problems after that if not properly mitigated and dried out completely.

Our technicians and crew members are completely trained and certified in drying techniques so that the damaged areas don't pose a problem later such as mold.

When you have SERVPRO of Hayward called to your disaster you are reassured that the job will be done professionally and completely by standards.

Lowest temps in Northern Wisconsin for 2020 so far

2/13/2020 (Permalink)

With the lowest temperatures we have seen in Northern Wisconsin so far this year, your home may be at risk.  Today at SERVPRO of Hayward the temps were at -18 degrees.  With these below 0 temperatures it is very risky to leave a home unattended and expect everything to be OK.  We have seen newly built homes to older homes with water pipes exploding and causing massive water damage.  It doesn’t matter on the year your home was built but how well you are taking care of it.  If you are leaving your place of residence for an extended period time we suggest you turn off your water while away, if staying in your home or cabin, leave a stream of water running and keep your basement areas well heated to prevent frozen pipes.  If you fall to a disaster of busted pipes give us a call at 715-634-0699 with 24/7 emergency restoration needs at SERVPRO of Hayward.

Pipe Burst in Hayward

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning up yourself after a water pipe bursting can be a pain and we realize this at SERVPRO of Hayward.  In some cases, excess water can be removed through the use of a wet-dry vacuum unit, but in cases of considerable depth, such as several feet of water, more heavy-duty equipment, such as powered submersible pumps, will be required. All of the water will need to be pumped out of the structure and then fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers will need to be brought in to remove residual moisture from the property.  We are here for when the water is too much for you to handle.  At SERVPRO of Hayward, we offer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Emergency restoration services.  Give us a call at 715-634-0699.

Cleaning up after a water damage in Washburn County

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

Depending on the amount of water first thing salvage important belongings.  In the case of standing water in any room, you should quickly unplug any electronics before you start recovering important belongings. When salvaging items that have come in contact with water, prioritize things that are the most difficult to replace or the most expensive, such as important documents, family keepsakes, computers, and TVs.  Start by wiping all of your personal items down with an antimicrobial, move them to a dry location and put fans on them, until the insurance company can get there to assess if items need to be professionally cleaned or thrown away. Other than damaged drywall and flooring, keep everything around until the insurance company comes, so they can confirm the quality and grade of your items to file your claim. If you’ve been gone with a water leak for more than 72 hours, mold has had a chance to spread, and it’s all considered graywater – meaning everything must go.

Water Intrusion and Mold in the Ladysmith area

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

Water intrusion and mold in your home can lead to many unforeseen damages.  In this home, it appeared as though the toilet vent has been leaking causing mold and drywall damage to the bathroom ceiling.

From a catastrophic flooding event to a persistent plumbing leak, any water intrusion could lead to mold growth. Even high humidity that causes condensation on cold surfaces could be enough to trigger growth.

It only takes 24 to 48 hours from the time water is introduced for mold to start growing. Therefore, if you just ran across flood water or a plumbing leak with no indication of how long it’s been there, you may want to hire a mold remediation company to test for mold.  Luckily SERVPRO of Hayward has trained and certified technicians to do this for your home or business.

Give us a call at 715-634-0699 for all your water restoration needs.

There are a number of reasons why your Hayward basement could flood, including:

Flood Cleanup Tips for Sawyer County

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

Flooded home:

As the snow and ice has quickly melted, you may be standing in a flooded area.  Here are a few tips from American Red Cross that can help you cleanup up after a flood.  If the job is just too large, give the professional team at SERVPRO of Hayward a call at 715-634-0699.

Tips:

  • Wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and rubber boots, and be cautious when cleaning up.
  • Learn more about how to clean up after a flood, including the supplies you’ll need, how to sanitize food contact surfaces, and how to repair water damage.
  • Be careful when moving furnishings or debris, because they may be waterlogged and heavier.
  • Throw out items that absorb water and cannot be cleaned or disinfected. This includes mattresses, carpeting, cosmetics, stuffed animals and baby toys.
  • Throw out all food, beverages and medicine exposed to flood waters and mud. When in doubt, throw it out. This includes canned goods, plastic utensils, baby bottle nipples and containers with food or liquid that has been sealed shut.
  • Pump out flooded basements gradually (about one-third of the water per day) to avoid structural damage. If the water is pumped out completely in a short period of time, pressure from water-saturated soil on the outside could cause basement walls to collapse.
  • Service damaged septic tanks, cesspools, pits, and leaching systems as soon as possible. Damaged sewage systems are health hazards.

Water Backup/ Sewer Backup... Are you covered?

1/12/2017 (Permalink)

The drain is backing up, and then going back down the drain.

Tips for trying to Prevent Frozen Pipes

1/12/2017 (Permalink)

  • Let a faucet drip that has a supply pipe running along an outside wall. You do not need a strong flow, just enough to keep the water flowing. Flowing water freezes slower than standing water in a pipe.
  • Do not turn your heat down during windy cold days. The cooling down period allows the cold to penetrate walls before it comes into your house. The pipes are exposed to this cold air. Hot water heat is more prone to freezing due to the hot water in the heating lines. Hot water will freeze faster than cold or room temperature water.
  • Leave cabinet doors under sinks that face outside walls open. These areas are not generally heated but do receive the cold air coming in through walls. This will help prevent froze water supply and waste piping.
  • Insulate walls where piping runs. Opening walls and checking is not always practical. However checking for insulation when walls are open for repairs or remodeling is a great idea.
  • Keep garage doors closed when not going in or out. The cold air will freeze pipes exposed to garage walls. These walls are not always insulated as well as outside walls.
  • Shut off water to outside faucets. Leaking outside faucets and piping to them are caused by freezing over the winter. We replace many outside faucets and piping in the spring due to freezing.
  • Have a neighbor, relative or friend check on your house when you go out of town. Total house freeze ups that require major repair result from homes that the heat goes out and the house gets down below 32 degrees. All the plumbing freezes including toilets, faucets etc. This could amount to costs well over $10,000.00.
