Keep Your Hot Water Heater Functioning at Its Best

It’s easy to forget about your hot water heater as long as it’s doing its job. However, without regular maintenance, you may come home or wake up in the middle of the night to water everywhere. Some hot water heaters can hold fifty or more gallons of water and can make quite the mess!
There is some simple regular maintenance you can do to be sure your hot water heater is staying in tip-top shape.
- Once or twice a year, do a visual inspection of your hot water heater to check for any loose screws, nuts or bolts, as well as aged gaskets. Any of these could allow the tank to leak. Look for any signs of rust, corrosion or water pooled under the tank.
- Another tip for maintaining your hot water heater is to drain and flush it twice a year. This helps remove any sediment or debris in the tank.
- It is also advisable to make sure that the pressure relief valve is in proper working order. An improperly working pressure relief valve, although rare, could cause your tank to explode due to excessive built up pressure.
- The anode rod in your hot water heater should be replaced every three to five years. This rod attracts the elements in water that cause oxidation. Rust colored water and a metallic taste are sure signs that the anode rod needs replacing.
