Frigid Temperatures and Frozen Pipes

Winter storms in Wisconsin bring some pretty darn cold temperatures! With the cold temperatures, there is a higher risk of frozen pipes. If you do happen to have a frozen pipe burst, give SERVPRO of Hayward a call at 715-634-0699.
To avoid pipes, here are a few tips:
- Let a faucet that has a supply line running along an outside water drip. Flowing water freezes slower than standing water.
- Do not turn your heat down on windy, cold days. The cooling down period allows the cold to penetrate the walls before coming into your house. This will allow pipes to be exposed to cold air.
- Leave cabinet doors under sinks that face outside walls open. These areas are not typically heated but will get cold from the air outside. Leaving the doors open will allow heat to reach the pipes.
- Keep the garage door shut whenever possible. These walls are not always insulated as well as outside walls so they are more prone to freezing if they are exposed to frigid temperatures.
- Shut off water to outside faucets. Leaking outside faucet and piping is likely caused by freezing over the winter.
